Abstract:
Distinct from "dizziness" which is described by the patient as a subjective sensation of imbalance, vertigo is conventionally associated with a subjective or an objective sense of rotation. The disturbance is either a reversible or an irreversible lesion of the elaborate neuronal circuit for the balancing mechanism. Nausea and vomitting are frequent accompaniments of vertigo while other autonomic features viz. pallor, cold sweats, brady eardia or even syncope are less common. "Dizziness" must be differentiated from actual vertigo, because of the difference in the underlying pathology. The patient is usually unable to differentiate between dizziness and vertigo although it is Important to make an effort. Dizziness may be seen as a manifestation of acute anxiety state, depression, mobilization after prolonged stay in bed, high fever, severe anaemia and cardiovascular disorders. Besides bed rest, chlorpromazine, prochlorperazine or antihistamines give relief to patientAcetazolamide, a thiazide diuretic with a salt free diet and ammonium chloride are effective.
