Bioremediation of Polluted Water using Indigenous Microorganisms: An Effective Approach for Sustainable Environment

Abstract:
Water is a gift of nature, and no life form is possible without safe water but unfortunately due to increase industrial development and population rate, this natural gift is contaminated into several ways and hence the availability of safe drinking water to everyone has become an important need of current scenario. Pakistan has become a water deficit country due to depleting ground and surface water resources, prevailing droughts and shift of fresh water from agriculture to more pressing domestic as well as industrial uses. Due to continuous increase in population and industrialization, most of the sources become contaminated and unsafe for daily usage. Hence, the combination of polluted water consumption and poor hygiene practices results in illnesses which not only contribute to high child mortality and morbidity but also result in high health costs for treatment. Solid waste management system exists in Pakistan but only in large cities like Lahore and Karachi. However, in other cities like Peshawar, 04 sewage plants were in which only one sewage plant is currently operational. There are several reasons for malfunctioning of these plants, including the plants were established at unfeasible locations, several vast ponds made for water treatment had already been filled with garbage and lack of funds. Currently world is moving towards green technology where biological materials are used instead of chemicals for bioconversion of compounds. The scientific community of Pakistan is also focusing on utilization of indigenous microorganisms and their metabolites for bioremediation of toxic waste materials into usable form. This will result in the generation of more effective and sustainable environments with availability of safe drinking water to consumers.
