Abstract:
Azolla pinnata, an aquatic fern, has been used to provide nitrogen to paddy crops with certain degree of success in our experiments. It multiplies quickly in the presence of superphosphate in standing water whose pH ranges between 6.5 and 7.0. Azolla requires all the micro and macronutrients for its growth. The culture developed here can resist a temperature as high as 41C. When Azolla alone was used to provide nitrogen requirements to rice plants the grain yield was increased by 50% as compared to control, and when Azolla was used alongwith urea + phosphate the grain yield increased by 66% over control.
