Abstract:
In this paper we consider the effect of motion of the sonar head on the performance of the beamformer of the 360° scanning sonars. In this paper, we calculate the losses due to motion, in the performance of a time - delay beamformer and a pulse compressing beamformer. It is shown that in both cases the effect can be appreciable and that no advantage is obtained by using the pulse compressing beamformer. The main effect of the motion is to reduce the response of the beams parallel to the direction of movement. The level of the main lobe is strongly affected while the level of the side lobes remains practically unaffected by the motion. Because it is not the intent of this paper to study the effects of time quantization or clipped processing the interpolation and clipping processes involved in the 360° beamformer have been ignored.
