Abstract:
Thermal degradation of polyacrylonitrile has been investigated by isothermal thermogravimetric analysis in air at 200o , 300° 400° and 500 C for 40 minutes. It has been found that the polymer loses weight rapidly in the first few minutes and then it does not lose weight at 200°, 300° and 400° after the initial loss in weight. The polymer is assumed to have got ladder type structure. At 500° C it continues to lose weight after the initial rapid volatilization, which is likely due to stripping of the polymer chains leaving behind carbon structure. The energy of activation for the 20% degradation of polyacrylonitrile is found to be 28.45 k cal/mol.
