Abstract:
Tarnab-73 step forward in the evolution of wheat varieties was selected from the exchange breeding material of the coordinated wheat programme. Tarnab-73 alongwith 4 other varieties viz Khushal-69, Maxi Pak-69, Chenab-70 and Pak-70 was put in various types of yielded tests conducted at Tarnab, Pirsabak, Sera Naurang and D. I. Khan. In 42 yield trials. Tarnab-73 gave the highest mean yield of 36.29 maunds/acre having better quality wheat variety. It is a spring type variety having, good tillering capacity, dark green foliage and white glabrous glumes. It is a medium maturing variety taking 130-140 days to flowers. It is resistant to stem and yellow rust but moderately resistant to leaf rust. It is a semi dwarf variety with elastic straw and thus comparatively resistant to lodging. Its 1.000 grain weight is 40-42 gms and the grains are hard amber coloured and thus of good bread making quality.
