Abstract:
Plastic pollution is the most important global concern as it severely threatens living organisms in ecosystem. Traditional approaches like land filling and incineration to manage plastic waste are not effective because these methods are also associated with adverse effects. Environmental biotechnology offers an ecofriendly strategy that is utilization of microbes for the biodegradation of waste plastic. This study focuses on the isolation of plastic degrading bacteria from various ecological niches. Among all isolated strains, two strains with maximum potential of plastic degradation were selected for characterization and optimization studies. The bacterial isolates, named DS3 and MPW3, were identified as species of Bacillus and Micrococcus, respectively. The plastic sample used in this study was a type of PVC plastic, specifically plastic food wrap. An effect of two key physical parameters such as temperature and pH on the rate of plastic biodegradation was studied. Biodegradation analysis was done using weight loss method. Growth density and amount of dissolved CO2 after biodegradation were also determined It was observed that both strains optimally degraded plastic wraps at ú 35 C, pH 7.0 after 3 weeks of incubation. This study offers valuable insights for the in-situ degradation of plastic waste.
