CHE-2013: Design, Synthesis, and Mechanistic Insights into the Antibacterial Activity of Alkylated Benzimidazoles

Abstract:
As antibacterial resistance is increasing, there is an escalating need for the development of novel antibacterial agents with a unique mechanism of action. In medicinal chemistry, benzimidazole is renowned for its diverse properties. This study focuses on the design, synthesis, and evaluation of a series of N-alkylated benzimidazole derivatives for their in vitro antibacterial efficacy. The target compounds were efficiently synthesized and characterized using FTIR. Their antibacterial activity was also assessed. Structural activity relationship (SAR) analysis revealed that the nature and position of different functional groups in the compounds are critical for their activities. The results indicate that the strategic alkylation of the benimidazoles warrants further investigation for combating resistant bacterial infections.
