Abstract:
A transformer bridge developed for direct measurement of dielectric constant and power factor of insulating materials has been described. Well-defined voltage ratios, obtained with the help of the tapped transformer in conjunction with resistance and capacitance standards, determine these parameters. Effects of spurious admittances are conveniently counteracted by suitable trimmer elements. The design of the ratio-arm transformer itself, arrangement of various circuit elements of the bridge and other factors affecting its performance are carefully considered here. Frequency dependence of permitivity, resistivity and power factor of a number of insulating materials are graphically presented and discussed.
