Abstract:
Hyperuricemia is considered the precursor of gout (which is the most common inflammatory arthritis in adults). Hyperuricemia means an elevated uric acid level in blood. The normal range of uric acid in blood is from 3.5 to 7.2 mg/dl. Coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages in the world and may affect uric acid level and risk of gout. Here we review the available data of this topic. Uric acid level decreased with increasing coffee intake. A study published in rheumatology proves that men over the age of 40 who drink coffee regularly had a lower risk of developing gout and hyperuricemia. So, coffee consumption is associated with lower hyperuricemia. Coffee is slightly acidic (ph. 5.0 - 5.1) and can have a stimulating effect on humans because of its caffeine content. Furthermore, caffeine elevates blood sugar level and makes it more difficult to control in diabetics. So please be careful if you are diabetic. It can also cause elevation in blood pressure and heart rate.
