Abstract:
To determine the pattern of variation in TSH levels in patients of chronic Hepatitis "C" a Comparative Cross-Sectional Study was carried out at the department of Pathology Army Medical College Rawalpindi and AFIP Rawalpindi in collaboration with Dept of Medicine, Military Hospital Rawalpindi from Jan 2002 to Oct 2002. Serum samples of forty known cases of chronic hepatitis "C" who were diagnosed on the basis of raised transaminase activity, positive polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for HCV RNA and liver biopsy along with forty disease-free individuals were analyzed for thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), free thyroxin (FT4) and total tri-iodothyronine (T3) concentration using chemiluminescence technique on hormone auto analyzer. Out of 40 patients, 10 showed increased levels of TSH in the range 4.5 mlU/L to 8.0 mIU/L. Serum FT4 and T3 were found normal in all these patients. The difference between TSH in the study subjects and control group was statistically significant (p
