Abstract:
Medicago polymorpha Linn. was grown under 2.5 (control), 5.0, 7.5, 10.0, 12.5 and 15.0 dS/m salinity levels induced by NaCl is pots. Seeds did not germinate at 15.0 dS/m. The plant height, number of leaves, branches, fresh and dry weight of shoots decreased at 5.0 dS/m and higher levels of salinity. The length of the primary roots, declined at 5.0 dS/m while those of secondary roots and fresh and dry weight of the roots decreased at 7.5 dS/m. Root moisture contents enhanced with increasing salinity levels. The number of flowers and fruits decreased at all levels of applied concentrations. The number, fresh and dry weight of nodules decreased at 5.0 dS/m and higher levels of NaCl concentration. It was therefore concluded that although the plant is susceptible to high levels of salinity, yet it can be used for cultivation marginal saline lands for fodder and as a protective cover for reducing soil erosion.
