Abstract:
In the past few years, due to its significant deployment to meet global demand, the Internet of Things (IoT) has gained a lot of interest. The main issues in agricultural farming are climate change, soil erosion, biodiversity loss, changing food preferences among consumers, plants, and diseases. However, due to the lower lifetime of different energy resources needed to power the sensors over time, the operating time of IoT devices is restricted. The hybrid energy harvesting (HEH) technique has been demonstrated to show the potential to be used to supply the low energy required to power these types of devices. However, the main challenge of the HEH model is that the frequency of operation for multiple resources is different. The second challenge is the uncertainty of the renewable source and hence the output is not constant and stable. The general aim of this research is to investigate and elucidate the interaction of the main components and elements of the HEH technique. The elucidation of the component's interaction can be used to produce digital twins of the system which later can be simulated and investigated further. Subsequently, the digital twin of the HEH technique can then be utilized to create a control and optimization strategy that can be used to ensure that sufficient energy can be provided by the HEH technique such that it can power IOT devices accordingly. We proposed the use of a tuned Propotional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller to help optimize the HEH technique output. The final power generated from the optimally controlled HEH technique is expected to be able to power the IOT device sufficiently to sustain its independent operation.
