Abstract:
The radial flow stress fields and velocity profiles of Jenike and Shield have been used in the theory for the rate of dissipation due to the internal friction and wall friction in the flow in a cone. The validity of Jenike's velocity profiles is tested by comparing the total loss of potential energy of material flowing through two spherical control surfaces. This resulted that if the Jenike's velocity profiles are valid then the ratio of potential energy change and energy dissipation should be one. The sensitivity of the energy balance to the velocity profile is also tested by assuming simple linear dimensionless velocity profiles. This shows that energy balance is very sensitive to the velocity profile mainly because it depends on an interaction between the gradient of the velocity profile and the amount of material through the elements of larger cross-section nearer the hopper wall which also depends on the velocity profile.
