Abstract:
The allelopathic potential of Calotropis procera (Ait.) Ait. was tested against germination and early seedling growth of Pennisetum americanum and Setaria italica under laboratory condition. The results suggested that aqueous extracts from leaves and stems significantly inhibited not only germination and seedling growth but also reduced fresh and dry mass of the seedlings. It was observed that increasing the duration of soaking and amount of material being soaked enhanced the toxicity. Furthermore, dried parts were inhibitorier than their fresh counter parts. Stems were more toxic than leaves. It is suggested that Calotropis procera has strong allelopathic potential and might be candidate for biological control of weeds and insects. However, further detailed study is required regarding the nature of inhibitors, their quantification and stability in the soil to properly understand the allelopathic behavior of this plant.
