Abstract:

The paper attempts to describe the rationale behind the role of patents within the framework of a national industrial strategy. The Republic of Korea's (ROK) experience in implementing its patent system which has been instrumental in Korea's rapid economic growth is discussed. The discussion is extended to the significance of patents on transfer of technology, foreign investment and terms of trade.
