Abstract:
Throughout Pakistan during 26 years period 1234 blister samples were collected/received from buffaloes, cattle, sheep and goat suffering from Foot and Mouth disease (FMD) for identification and serotyping of the virus. The complement fixation test was adopted for this work. Foot and Mouth Disease was found to be endemic in Pakistan and outbreaks occurred mostly in the months of January to ch in Winter and , e in Summer, as well as in october. Typographical pattern indicated that the '0' type has been most regular prevalent serotype out of all the four types recorded. The '0' type was detected in 442 (35.82%), 'A' in 178(14.42%), Asia-I in 301(24.39%), 'C' in 2(0.16%) while no virus could be detected in 311(25.20%) samples. The incidence of FMD in cross bred/Exotic breeds of cows was much higher as compared to indigenous cows; moreover the cases of FMD recorded in buffaloes were much more than those of cows. The incidence of FMD in sheep/goat was found to be much lower than that of bovine perhaps due to the fact that the nature of disease is mild in these animals and it passes unnoticed.
