Abstract:
OBJECTIVE: To compare nonstructural protein-1 antigen detection by rapid and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay test and its correlation with polymerase chain reaction for early diagnosis of dengue. STUDY DESIGN: A Descriptive Case Series PLACE AND DURATION: Conducted at primary and secondary health centers of District Sargodha Punjab; study duration was six months from 10 July 2016 to15 November 2016 METHODOLOGY: Patient's Serum was used for NS1 Elisa and plasma was used for Polymerize Chain Reaction. Sensitivity and specificity of NS1 antigen was confirmed with Polymerize chain reaction and its efficacy was labeled. Other clinical manifestations (retro orbital pain, abdominal pain, Nausea vomiting, mayalgia, headache, rash, body ache, chills fever) were also noted on data record sheet. RESULTS: A total number of 470 patients showed that there were more males than females i.e. 66.2% and 33.8% respectively. Sensitivity and specificity of rapid dengue NS1 antigen detection test were found to be 62.24% and 39.42%, respectively whereas it was found to be 46.94% and 52.19%, respectively in NS1 antigen ELISA. CONCLUSION: The dengue infection can be screened more eficiently with Rapid NS1 antigen detection test as compared to NS1 antigen ELISA, as Rapid NS1 antigen had beetr sensitivity. But NS1 antigen ELISA had beetr specificity so can be used as diagnosis confirmation in laboratory.
