Abstract:
There has been a rapid growth in the applications of Solid State Nuclear Track- Detectors in studying the nuclear phenomena as well as in many fields of the Science and Technology. Investigations have been carried out to discover the best etchant for CR-39 detector. Measurements were made at different temperatures and concentrations of the etchants. To achieve this goal LiOH, NaOH, KOH, Mg(OH)2, Ca(OH) 2, and Ba(OH) 2 8H2O were .studied. The bulk etching rate VB and track etching rate Vr were measured systematically by using fission fragments track diameter method. The activation energies for bulk and track etching process and induction time were also measured. The results obtained were compared with that of NaOH. The limitations of the different etchants studied have been discussed .We have introduced the novel idea of molten etchant for the first time in the history of SSNTDs. It has been observed that when Ba(OH)2,.8H2O used in molten state as an etchant it unexpectedly reduced the etching time with high efficiency.
