Abstract:
A review and research study, related to the number of publications and awards of the elected Fellows of the Pakistan Academy of Sciences has been initiated. The Academy during a period of 42 years (1953 to 1994) elected a total number of 106 scientists as its Fellows. Age-wise, only one was between 21 and 30 years, 3 were between 31-40 years, 27 between 41 and 50 years, 46 between 51 and 60 years and 13 were above this age (10 being between 61 and 70, 2 between 71 and 80 and one between 91 and 90). The maximum number of scientists (46) were elected when they were between 51 and 60 years of age, followed in frequency by those (27) who were between 41 and 50 years age. It has further been observed that almost all the Fellows of the Academy brought out considerable number of research publications, both in the national and international journals of repute, and in collaboration with their colleagues. The data concerning publications and awards of some scientists, working in various organizations and scientific fields, has further been analyzed and compared qualitatively and semi-quantitatively in particular for a 10 years period (1984-1993) in a sample of 10 selected scientists comprising Fellows of the Academy (4) as well as non-Fellows (6). The average output of this selected group of scientists has been observed to be between 25 to 68 publications per 10 years and with a paper to author ratio varying between 2 to 3, which ratio in agreement with earlier findings.
