Abstract:
Ticks are ectoparasites of wild and domestic animals, act as vector of various pathogens such as bacteria, nematodes, viruses, protozoa, spirochetes and rickettsia etc. Dairy industry plays an important role in providing various products such as milk, meat, proteins and carbohydrates. Buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) as domesticated animal was found highly infested with ticks in district Dera Ismail Khan. The knowledge about tick species found on buffaloes in Dera Ismail Khan was acknowledge before this study. To full fill this research gap, the present study was conducted to check the tick prevalence and tick infestation on buffalo in this area of KPK Pakistan. Five species; Dermacento rmarginatus, Haemaphysalis punctata, Hae. sulcate, Rhipicephalus microplus and Hyalomma anatolicum belonging to four genera were recorded in the study area. Among species, Hy. anatolicum was widely distributed in all tehsils of Dera Ismail Khan followed by D. marginatus, Hae. Punctata, Hae. Sulcate and Rh. microplus. The results showed that overall tick prevalence on buffalo was 67%. The maximum tick infestation was recorded in month of June and July while minimum in April. Tick growth, development, activity and reproduction was highly affected with climatic conditions. The high population of ticks was collected from tail while lowest from ear. The significant difference (p<0.00) was recorded in the prevalence of tick infestation in all study areas or tehsils. Younger and female animals were highly infested than older and male. The current study provides significant data to adopt the proper control measures against ticks.
