A retrospective study of skin cancer in Baluchistan.

Abstract:
A retrospective study of 1247 patients of skin cancer was carried out in Centre for Nuclear Medicine & Radiotherapy (CENAR) Quetta from Ist January 1988 to 31st December, 1999 (12 years). During this period, 7840 new cases were registered. Skin cancer constituted 1247 (15.91% in number. It was studied that this cancer was 1st most common tumor in all male patients and 2nd most common malignant disease in female patients. The aim of this study is to highlight the incidence, early detection, and search of etiological factors, management and various other parameters of the disease. Hence it is studied that average 113 new cases of skin cancer are registered at CENAR, Quetta annually. Male slightly dominated the female. Basal cell carcinoma is most common skin tumor (62.5%). The common primary site noted at the time of presentation was face. About 42% of patients were from Afghanistan. 8.4% cases are above the age of 40 years. The disease is most common in low socio economic field worker group (more than 95%).
