Abstract:
Moringa oliefera is a multipurpose tree and its leaf extract is also source of many plant growth regulators. It causes morphological and physiological changes that result in increased growth and yield of different crops including wheat. An experimental study was done at Old Botanical Garden University of Faisalabad to examine the effect of moringa leaf extract (MLE) on physiology of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Fresh MLE (3%) was applied as medium supplementation at different growth stages like seedling, tillering, booting and maturity stage. The experimental design was completely randomized design (CRD) with three replicates per treatment. After 15 days of medium supply, harvests were taken at every stage to analyze the growth parameters such as shoot length (cm), root length (cm), root fresh weight (g) and dry weight (g), shoot fresh weight (g) and dry weight (g), number of le1aves per plants, leaf area per plant, number of roots per plant, stem diameter, root diameter and root and shoot length (cm), biochemical parameters like chlorophyll a and b content, carotenoids, root and shoot ascorbic acid, phenolics, soluble sugars, anthocyanin, flavonoids and ion analysis such as sodium, potassium, calcium, phosphate, nitrate, sulphate content and yield parameters such as number of grain per spike and per plant, number of spikes per plant and spikelets, spike length and awn length. Results showed that application of MLE greatly enhance the growth and development of wheat plants. Ion uptake of K, Ca, P, S and N increases with MLE application. Improved wheat growth and yield was due to the availability of specific growth enhancing compounds and essential nutrients which were readily available to the root for uptake and metabolism. Hence it was concluded that, MLE can be used as environment friendly and cheap source of growth promoters and its field use is pragmatic.
