Abstract:
OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of chronotypes on mental health and academic performance of university students. STUDY DESIGN: A quantitative study using correlational design. PLACE AND DURATION: At Department of Applied Psychology, GC University Faisalabad from September 10th 2010 to August 10th 2011. METHODOLOGY: A sample of 200 university students (50% females; 50% males), with the age range of 20-25 years, was drawn from 2 public sector universities of Faisalabad. Morningness- Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ) and General Health Questionnaire-28 (GHQ28) were administered to the participants. Additionally, academic performance was assessed through students' attendance record and cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of last two semesters. The information was cross-checked with the concerned department's examination incharge. RESULTS: Proportion of evening type students (58%) was greater than morning types (42%). Correlation analysis showed a significant association between eveningness and total scores on GHQ-28 (r = -.15, p < .05 ). Academic performance was not significantly correlated with MEQ and GHQ total scores. Later, regression analysis indicated that lower scores on MEQ significantly predicted poorer mental health especially social dysfunctioning. Moreover depression and anxiety/insomnia significantly predicted lower grades. According to the t-test results, even oriented students reported more somatic symptoms (p < .01) and experienced higher level of anxiety (p < .05) as compared to morning types. CONCLUSIONS: Knowledge of diurnal preferences have certain implications for understanding the factors behind mental health problems and academic performance of university students. Results are discussed for self-regulatory behaviors of university students.
