An analysis of professional and technical competencies needed by agriculture officers in Sindh.

Abstract:
There is a need to ascertain the micro-competence of agricultural extension agents in major areas of technical agriculture and to determine their training needs with regard to the transfer of agricultural technologies. The study was done through survey method. The study depicted that majority of respondents (63 percent) were agriculture graduates having B.Sc./M.Sc. degrees in various disciplines. The study also indicated that about 97 percent of the respondents were young having 1-20 years of experience. It was found that out of 10 very important professional competencies, four were from the subject area of teaching methods, two important items were related to evaluation of extension programmes while one item each was from the field of agricultural communication and understanding of human behaviour. Among technical competencies Agronomy, Crop Protection, Horticulture and Agricultural Economics and Marketing emerged as the mos.: important subject areas in which the Agriculture Officers needed proper training.
