Abstract:
To see the incidence of volvulus of sigmoid colon in our hospital. Design: Patients with intestinal obstruction due to volvulus of sigmoid colon were prospectively studied. Place and Duration: This study was conducted in the department of surgery at Sandeman Provincial Hospital, Quetta, from January, 1995 to December, 1996. Subject/Methods: Fifty patients admitted were subjected to surgery after a provisional diagnosis was made on history, physical examination and radiological findings. Recommended operative procedures were performed and final diagnosis was made on operative findings. Results: The volvulus of sigmoid colon was found to be common cause of large gut obstruction accounting for 24.8%, 84% patients were between 21-60 years of age with the peak incidence in their 4th and Sth decades with male to female ratio of 9:1. In 47 patients (94%) laparotomy was done, gut was viable in 86% and nonviable in 14%. Most of the patients remained admitted with minimum and maximum stay of 7 and 32 days respectively. The overall mortality was attributed to viability of gut and general condition of the patients. Conclusion: Colopexy should be done only in those patients who cannot bear the prolong anaesthesia. Rest of the patients should be subjected to resection and primary anastomosis.
