Abstract:
Studies were conducted during 1986 and 1987 on the germination of tea seed of variety Qi-men (China). The methods/media evaluated in this study were, sand, mixture of sand, soil and FYM in equal proportions and seed germinator. During 1986, 77%,72% and 75% germination was observed in seeds placed in mixture, sand and seed germinator, respectively. During 1987, the germination from sand, mixture and seed germinator was 65%, 62% and 58% respectively. The pattern of germination rate in seed germinator remained the same, with a very low germination during first 15 days and most of the seeds germinated between 15 and 30 days, in the two years. The germination rate in mixture and sand was higher in 1986 than the germination rate observed in 1987 during first 15 days. In addition to better germination of tea seed placed in sand, it was very easy to handle under sorting out the germinated seeds without causing damage to protruding radicles. It is, therefore, concluded that placing of tea seed in sand beds is the suitable methods for obtaining optimum germination.
