Tectonics of Darra Adam Khel and adjoining areas, Kohat District, Pakistan.

Abstract:
The rock sequence exposed in Darra (pass) Adam Khel belongs to a thick sedimentary suite ranging in age from Jurassic to Mioccene. Based on recent work, two models for its tectonic interpretation can be proposed: (a) The Mesozoic and Paleocene rocks of Darra area are riding on Miocene (Murree) rocks with a detachment structure in between. The fault, a member of the Main Boundary Thrust system (MBT), is gently folded and appears on the surface at both ends of Darra where Murree Formation is overlain by Jurassic sequence. (b) The area may represent a' pop-up' structure between a southern (forethrust) and a northern (backthrust) fault. The striking features such as the sudden high relief starting from flat land on either side and complex structural pattern in the central part, are produced by movement along these faults. The Mesozoic and Paleocene rocks are thrust on Miocene molasse deposits on both sides. Structurally the area can be divided into an upper region dominated by imbricate thrusting (suprastructure) and a lower part where a duplex system has developed (infrastructure). The roof thrust of the duplex that separates the two structural zones is folded so that its erosion has exposed several horse blocks. Two deformational episodes, producing an older set of major overturned folds verging south and a younger set of upright folds, have been identified.
