In this study adoption of agricultural machinery, fertilizer and soil as well as plant protection measures in four selected villages i.e. Sufaid Dehri and Mathra in Peshawar district and Khanmai and Dargai of Charsadda districts, were studied during 2004. The selected villages are the center of all information, resources and market and are famous for various kinds of crops and vegetables production. A total of 80 farmers, 20 from each village were selected. Field surveys carried out during 2004 in district Peshawar and Charsada revealed that 10% of the respondents farmers had their own tractor and the remaining 901/`r hired the tractors for ploughing and threshing and 62.5% for transportation purposes. For farm operations cultivator was used by 53.75% of the sampled farmers, mould board plough by 41.25, disk-plough by 32.5%, harrow by 77.5%, rotavator by 52.5% and leveling blade by 65%. On average, in the selected villages, 314 bags of DAP, 796 bags of Urea, 222 bags of Nitrate and 86 bags of other fertilizer were used. Majority (65%) of the sample farmers used broadcast method for fertilizer application before sowing and 53.75% applied it after sowing. The use of fertilizer with irrigation water was practiced by 31.25% after sowing. Weed control measures were practiced by 76.25%, terracing by 6.25% and plantation by 7.5% to protect soil.
