Abstract:
Beef is valuable food item and consumption pattern of people has been progressively shifting towards beef for past few years in Pakistan. Despite this growing demand, there's a substantial issue with consumer trust regarding the quality and origin of beef. Its dire need of time to develop innovative traceability solution and its implement in beef supply chain to trigger beef trade across the borders ensuring food safety. A project was designed with main objectives; to capture beef data through production, processing and distribution stages and enable end consumer to trace back the origin of beef from fork to farm through smart technologies like internet and QR code scanning, etc. The web-based livestock traceability solution software is developed in the form of Mobile App, “MeaTrex”. Numerous attributes covering production, processing, and distribution stages are initially documented during regular visits. Subsequently, this data is entered into the application by the administrator. The recorded attributes include animal ID, species/breed, body coat color, horn type, age, live weight, origin, producer name, address, housing type, living climate, stall type, feeding, grazing facility, salt lick, health status, deformity status, disease condition history, veterinary consultancy, treatment history, withdrawal period, vaccination status, deworming status, name of the slaughterhouse, method of slaughter, carcass weight, butcher name, chilling facility, beef cut packaging, distributor type, beef transport refrigeration, and date of carcass supply. Once this comprehensive information is input into the traceability software, the end consumer or customer can trace back from fork to farm details about beef origin while buying packaged beef through scanning the labelled QR code using MeaTrex App. Outcome of this project may trigger beef trade round the year within country and export. It is concluded that beef consumer's trust can be enhanced through provision of online access to trace back animal origin and other recorded details through production, processing and distribution phase.
