Abstract:
The Greco-Arab system adopted new medicines from every clime at every time on the conditions that (1) their temperament and action were at first determined and their actions and characteristics interpreted in Greco-Arab terminology and (2) while using it undue haste was not exhibited. Several American, European, homeopathic, allopathic and ayurvedic drugs have been incorporated into Greco-Arab materia medica although in several instances their temperaments have been found to be different. Some drugs were used in Greco-Arab system many years earlier than in modern medicine e.g.melilot. Many synthetic drugs are basically the counterparts of the natural drugs. The heating, cooling, moist and dry terms used in indigenous system are related to the chemical constitution of drugs and their mode of action. The humoural concept of Greco-Arab system is found in all other system in some or other form and it is a precursor of modern scientific work including allopathy and homeopathy. Due to sudden decline of Muslim prosperity Greco-Arab system became petrified while the later 2 systems developed and used sophisticated techniques as well. Modern hospital administration and routine are all legacies of mediaeval Muslim hospital administration. Hamdard Laboratories are the first Greco-Arab organization to standardize polypharmaceuticals and work on natural products is being .done In P.C.S.I.R. Labs.
