Abstract:
Recent research has shown an intricate relationship between luminal microbiota and the gut-brain axis which is critical in maintaining gut and brain health. The concept of disruption of a stable microbiota abundance and diversity (dysbiosis) is especially pertinent in treatment of diseases including the functional gastrointestinal (GI) disorders, inflammatory bowel disorders, but also a number of neurological (e.g. Parkinson and Alzheimer) and psychological (depression and stress) disorders. Causes of dysbiosis may be due to dietary change, antibiotics, environmental insult for e.g. major floods and even COVID-19, and understanding the causes of dysbiosis is key to its treatment. Probiotics and fecal microbiota transplantation may be useful through modulation of dysbiosis and the gut-brain axis.
