Abstract:
A pot experiment (60 pots) was conducted at Barani Agricultural Research Institute, Chakwal, Pakistan during 2004-05. Ten varieties/lines of wheat were included to study their response to terminal heat effect. After anthesis, half pots of each entry were shifted to a glass chamber where temperature was maintained equal to atmospheric temperature and remaining half pots were shifted to another chamber where temperature was maintained at 4 to 10 °C. The data regarding plant height, main spike length, spikelets per main spike, grains per main spike, 1000-grain weight, grain yield of main tiller and days taken to maturity were recorded and a significant effect of terminal heat towards 1000-grain weight was observed in various wheat genotypes. An `advanced line 30001 showed maximum effect of terminal heat with 46.2 percent, reduction in grain weight followed by Ingalab-91 (38.9%). Variety 4C030, Chakwal-86 and 2C021 were least affected showing a reduction in grain weight of 16.4, 16.5 and 18.8 percent, respectively. Similar effect of terminal heat was also observed on main spike yield with maximum reduction (54.6%) in 30001 followed by lnqalab-91 (46.8%) and minimum (11.1%) in 2C021.
