Abstract:
The morphology and Crystallography of precipitates in Al-Si alloy have been investigated using transmission electron microscopy. The various morphologies observed in this system were: triangular plates, laths, rods and rectangular plates. The first formed precipitates, i. e. at low ageing temperatures and short ageing times were the triangular plates with a cube: cube orientation-relationship with the matrix. As the ageing temperature and/or time was increased, lath and rod shaped precipitates were formed and at extended time large rectangular plates became the predominant morphology. All these precipitates exhibited different orientation relationships with the matrix.
