The use and abuse of psychotropic drugs.

Abstract:
The profile of 588 drug addicts, who attended Drug Abuse Treatment Centre, Hospital, Multan for treatment and detoxification from July 1982 to June 1985 was studied. The main objective of this retrospective study was to know the types of psychotropic drugs being abused by the people in and around Multan and also to assess the magnitude of this problem. Government employees and females, formed 6.63%, 7.48% and 3.23% of all the cases respectively. Majority of addicts were literate and married. It was found that the proportion of psychotropic drugs addicts in 1982 was only 8.5%, which gradually increased to 43.03% by the year 1985. Many of the addicts abused more than one drug. During the study period, the use of Heroin (di-acetyl morphine) increased by 700%.
