Abstract:
Directional variation in the undrained shear strength of cohesive soils may occur to such a degree that the applicability of conventional methods for analysing the stability of earth masses are unsatisfactory or uneconomical. In this study the undrained shear strength of soft Rangsit clay on different failure planes was determined by performing direct shear box Tests. Ten inch diameter undisturbed samples were collected from 5. 00m to 5. 5m depth. Two series of direct shear box tests were carried out on five different specimen orientations. The applied normal stress was equal to the total and the effective normal in-situ stresses for series I and II respectively. The result of the undrained shear strength of soft Rangsit clay varies within wide limits depending upon the direction along which the clay deposit is anisotropic with regard to undrained shear strength.
