Abstract:
Coronopus didymus (L.) Smith grows as weed in rabi crops, and causes severe damage to the density and growth of wheat in field. Owing to the relation of the weed to family Brassicaceae, members of which are rich in allelochemicals like glucosinolates and isothiocyanates, we suspected the involvement of allelopathic potential of the weed in this process. For this purpose, aquous extracts from different parts of the weed with three soaking periods (24, 48 and 72 hrs) were tested against seed germination and growth of radicle and plumule of Triticum aestivum cv. Sahar 2006 under 48 and 72 hrs incubation periods. The toxicity of extracts was greater towards radicle growth compared to the plumule growth. The extracts with higher concentarations and longer soaking periods were inhibitorier than those having lower concentrations and shorter soaking periods. The order of toxicity of the extracts from different parts was sim ilar for seed germination and growth of radicle and plumules, leaves and roots being the most and least toxic parts, respectively. These results suggest that Coronopus didymus seems to be a rich source of strong allelochemicals that might be the major caus e for density and growth suppression of wheat in the field.
