Abstract:
Topical administration of drugs is a vital route for drug delivery systems and it has the potential of delivering medicinal substances to a specific area thus reducing the systemic side effects. Among the diverse fungal flora of human skin, Candida albicans is a prominent commensal which stays on the skin and causes different skin diseases after invading tissues. The antifungal drug such aseconazole nitrate can be used to treat a wide range of fungal skin infections. In this study, we have developed and optimized nanogel formulations, and they were characterized physicochemically. The stability of the prepared formulations was evaluated by subjecting it to different temperatures, which were found to be stable for the specified period of study. The pH of all prepared nanogels formulations were also determined by using a digital pH meter and it was found to be from 4.95to 6.1, with no significant change over study period. All formulations had sufficient viscosity ranging from 3475cps to 3560 cps, resulting in excellent spreadability and extrudability. FT-IR study showed no incompatibility between drug and its excipients. The drug content of optimized formulation was about 97.42%. In the in-vivo study when formulations were applied to the skin of rats, the nanogel NG3 demonstrated good anti-fungal efficacy when compared to standard medication. Based on the obtained results, it was demonstrated that the formulations have excellent anti-fungal efficacy when applied topically.
