Abstract:
Several physiological and hematological parameters were studied in 15 adult Muslim volunteers during the fasting of Ramadan. Blood pressure (BP), hemoglobin (Hb), packed cell volume (PCV), body weight, skinfold thickness (SFT), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), electrolyte concentration of serum & urine, blood glucose, urea, serum proteins, cholesterol and urine creatinine were determined before the onset of Ramadan and after 25 days of fasting. A significant (P) increase in blood glucose, urea and cholesterol level was observed after fasting. The total plasma proteins remained almost constant after fasting, however, a significant (P) elevation in globulin and a decrease in albumin was observed. The changes observed remained within the normal values of various parameters studied and probably represent an adaptation response to this particular dietary regime.
