Abstract:
A robust and low cost rotor speed estimation method based upon mechanical dynamics of the wind turbine system is proposed in this paper. It relies upon the detection of tower shadow signature lying in the sub harmonic region of the current spectrum of an induction machine. The signature is retrieved using Hilbert transform based envelope detection, followed by the decomposition of current signals into its frequency components using DFT (Discrete Fourier Transform). An added feature of the proposed scheme is its low computational cost, which makes it an attractive choice for hardware implementation. The proposed scheme is validated by simulation and experimental results.
