Abstract:
Macro and micro - anatomy of hippocampus of thirty mongrel dogs were observed. The paired hippocampi resembled ram's horns. Rostromedially the two hippocampi were connected by the hippocampal commissure. A rather deep sulcus, the hippocampal sulcus, divided the medial surface of the hippocampus into the medial parahippocampal gyrus and .the latera dentate gyrus. The ventricular surface was covered by a thick layer of white matter, the alveus, which consisted of the efferent and commissural fibres of the hippocampus. Some of the alveus fibers gathered along the lateral edge of the hippocampus and formed the fimbria. The hippocampal cortex consisted of three cellular layers, the molecular layer, the pyramidal cell layer and the polymorphic cell layer. The most characteristic feature of the cortex was the pyramidal cell layer, which was composed of two rows of pyramidal cells of variable size.
