Abstract:
To determine the prevalence of heterozygous beta thalassemia in medical students belonging to different parts of N.W.F.P. and to arrange counseling of the family members of the affected students to avoid family marriages, a descriptive, observational study, was conducted in Khyber medical college Peshawar in 1998. Four hundred students of different classes (from 1" year to final year) were included in the study. A preliminary interview, family history of consanguinity and clinical examination of every student was taken and was followed by estimation of relevant hematological parameters. Out of 400 students, heterozygous beta thalassemia was detected in 16 patients (4%). Nine were male (2.25%), and 7 were females (1.75%). The frequency of consanguinity was found in 96 cases (24%).
