Abstract:
Pressure ulcers (PUs) are common international afflictions that occur in many different healthcare settings. The aim of this prospective, randomized, multi-center study was to determine whether the healing rates of wounds treated with microcurrent electrical stimulation (Microcurrent Electrical Therapy, MCT) are influenced by patient gender. PUs on 60 male and female patients were enrolled from 6 hospitals. All patients were followed for 12 weeks and the surface areas of the wounds were measured on a weekly basis. The analysis was carried out using the alternating Logistic Regression (ALR) and Generalized Linear Mixed Model GLMM) models. We observed that only 27.9% of observations had a healing rate of at least 60%. In addition it was also observed that influence that rate of wound healing. We found that the interaction between patient treatment and gender significantly influence pressure ulcer healing rate.
