Abstract:
Objective: Objectives of the study were to evaluate effectiveness of Mirena in patients with DUB in whom other conservative management options are ineffective. Patients and methods: It was Quasi-experimental study carried out in 50 patients in reproductive age in Unit-III Lady Willingdon Hospital, Lahore. Duration: February 2006 to 31st March, 2007. Results: Fifty patients, recruited in the study. The age of the patient varied from 28-50 years. All were multiparous 38(76%) patients had polymenorrhagia and 12(24%) menorrhagia. 7 patients were lost to follow up. 5 patients expelled device spontaneously. 5 patients left trial because of heavy bleeding 1 pain during initial 3 months. Among 33 patients, Mirena was found to be effective, in 29(87.8%) and 4(12.3%) patients requested for removal (table 1) because of bleeding and pain during 6 months. Conclusion: The Levonorgestrol releasing intrauterine system is an effective non-surgical treatment for the management of menorrhagia and dysmenorrhoea that has additional benefit as contraceptive and in releasing premenstrual syndrome.
