Abstract:
The standard regimen recommended by W.H.O. is to start treatment with three drugs, S.M., INH and TH or S.M., INH and PAS. In case of intolerance to TH and PAS., Ethambutal should be substituted. This regimen should be continued until sputum becomes negative when treatment with thiocetaze and INH (150-200 mg.) snould be continued. The relapse rate is much lower if treatment is given for 18 to 24 months. However, short term therapy for 9 months has given very satisfactory results. This is RM+EB/SM for 2 months followed by RM+INH for 7 months. Such therapy is primarily meant for newly-diagnosed cases.
