Abstract:
Conversion of hides and skins into leather involves various operations such as unhairing, liming, deliming, bating and tanning. Among these bating is one of the most important operation and it is the only operation in the leather manufacture where chemical methods can not be substituted for enzyme process. Bating is done for obtaining fine and smooth leather. These days deliming and bating are carried out in one operation with the help of a bating agent which is a mixture of proteolytic enzymes and a deliming salt. Proteolytic enzymes most extensively used for commercial purpose are mostly obtained from animal pancreas. Here leather production and local production of bating agent from animal pancreatic tissues is reported.
