Abstract:
Aggregate samples taken from the roof and walls of the 15th Century`s shrine of Bibi Jiwandi, situated at Uch Sharif, District Bahawalpur, were analyzed for determining, both mineralogical and chemical, composition of the construction / plastering material used at that time. Samples were analyzed by using various laboratory techniques including petrography, sieve analyses, X-ray diffraction and chemical analysis. Photomicrography of the thin sections was also carried out. The results indicate that material used in the construction of the shrine is a mixture of natural materials, basically limestone fragments and lime concretions, which have been mixed in suitable proportions, along with fine sand and clay, to form the plaster. The detailed petrographic work, supported by photomicrographs, has been discussed here.
