Trends of gastric tumors in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

Abstract:
To investigate the trends of gastric tumours in the Kingdom of Bahrain over a period of five years. Methods: This retrospective study took place in the department of Pathology, Salmaniya Medical Complex Bahrain, from January 2001 to December 2005. Those patients were included who were endoscoped and biopsied for upper gastrointestinal symptoms. Histopathology reports were retrieved from the files and slides for biopsy proven tumours were reviewed from 71 cases. Tumours were classified into two groups: group 1, adenocarcinomas; and group 2, other tumours, which included lymphomas, gastrointestinal tumours and carcinoids. Patients were classified into four age groups 80 years. Pearson Chi Square method was used for statistical analysis. Results.: Gastric tumours were diagnosed in 71 of the 3910 cases. These included 59 (83.1%) gastric carcinomas and 12 (16.9%) other gastric tumours, comprising 5 (41.7%) lymphomas, 4 (33.3%) gastrointestinal stromal tumours and 3 (25%) carcinoids.
