Abstract:
Six local garlic varieties consisting of Agliobianco, Alladher local, Chinese, Hazro, Peshawar local and S4 were tested during 2002 at Swabi, for evaluating their resistance levels against P.Porri and A.Porri , causal agents of rust and purple blotch diseases, respectively. Results indicated that cultivar Hazro performed best among all the tested cultivars by displaying high and moderate resistance to rust and purple blotch, respectively, while its comparative yield (9.96 t-1 ha) and bulb index (6.36cm) also remained at top. Cultivar Alladher local was found resistant to rust while it displayed moderate susceptibility to purple blotch. None of the cultivars except Hazro showed acceptable resistance levels to both diseases and prior recommending it for wider cultivation; this cultivar should be evaluated at multi-location hot spots in.
