Abstract:
Trypanosoma evansi from a camel was maintained in the laboratory by serial passage in guinea-pigs. It was found necessary to pass the parasite through mice after 3-4 guinespig passages in order to maintain its infectivity for guineapigs. The infection in guineapigs caused severe anaemia and leucocytopenia. In mice T. evansi multiplied more rapidly and to a higher concentration of parasites in the blood than in guineapigs, and caused an acute type of disease with high mortality. Transient, symptomless infection developed in rabbits and in a dog after intraperitoneal inoculation with T. evansi.
